When not being worn, store your jewellery in the pouch or box that it came in. This will minimise the effects of sunlight and the environment. Please avoid all contact with water, body lotions, perfumes, sun creams, cleaning products and makeup as these may affect the plating. (please see our jewellery care guidelines for further info)
Jewellery Care
Sterling silver & plated generally follow the same rules of care. All
sterling silver and plating can tarnish, corrode or wear with time and
wear. It is very important to take the correct care of your jewellery to
keep it looking its best and prevent tarnish and corrosion. Proper care
includes being conscious of how you store, wear and clean your
jewellery.
What causes tarnishing?Tarnishing, also
known as oxidation, is caused when oxygen or sulphur comes in contact
with sterling silver. It gives it a darker colour. Sterling Silver comes
in different levels of purity (i.e. 0.95 or 0.925) and higher purity
silver will tarnish more quickly. Sometimes, sterling silver is
intentionally oxidized to create depth and certain details on a piece of
jewellery.
Care & Storing Sterling Silver JewelleryOxygen in the air will cause tarnish along with exposure to water, chemicals, deodorant, hairspray and perfume etc. To
take care of plated jewellery simply wash in warm water using a very
mild detergent and dry thoroughly. Be careful not to rub too hard or the
plating may be removed.
To take care of your sterling silver
jewellery, polish it frequently with a soft dry cloth to avoid tarnish
(do not use silver dip). Ideally, use a specially impregnated silver
polishing cloth to ensure that your jewellery continues to retain its
original lustre and shine.
- Use a special non-abrasive cloth to avoid scratching.
- Frequently rotate to a new section of the cloth.
- Avoid areas that are intentionally oxidized.
- Do not rub in a circular pattern, follow the grain of the silver.
- Avoid rubbing too hard on engraved sections.
If
you have severe tarnishing or antique pieces that need extra care,
considering sending your Sterling Silver jewellery to a professional for
cleaning. Beware of commercial cleaning solutions as many present a
health hazard or may damage your jewellery.
We recommend you protect
your silver jewellery by storing it in the gift box you received with
your jewellery or an air tight bag and in a cool, dry place away from
humidity, keeping individual pieces separate to avoid scratching and
keep clasps/closures undone. You can also place a packet of silica or
piece of chalk in the storage bag to absorb moisture.
Wearing Sterling Silver Jewellery Wearing
your Sterling Silver jewellery regularly can actually help prevent
tarnishing since the oils from your body have a cleaning effect.
However, some activities can accelerate tarnishing or even cause
corrosion. You should remove your Sterling Silver jewellery before doing
any of the following:
- Using household cleaning supplies.
- Cooking with mustard, onions, eggs, or any other foods that contain sulphur.
- Sunbathing
- Swimming
- Spraying Hairspray
- Putting on Lotion and Makeup
Avoid contact with chemicals, perfume, hairspray and deodorant.
Our
products are guaranteed against manufacturing faults, but not misuse.
To maintain the condition of your jewellery remove when showering,
swimming or when undertaking manual or domestic work
